DISCOVERY FLIGHT FAQ

What is a Discovery Flight?

A Discovery Flight is an introductory flight experience designed to give you a firsthand look at what flying—and flight training—is really like. You'll fly with a Certified Flight Instructor and have the opportunity to take the controls yourself.

Do I need any previous flying experience?

No. Discovery Flights are designed for people with little or no flying experience. Your instructor will walk you through everything you need to know before and during the flight.

Is there an age requirement?

No. There is no minimum age requirement for a Discovery Flight.

You don't have to be a certain age to experience flying. Pilot certification has separate age requirements—for example, the FAA requires a person to be at least 16 to receive a student pilot certificate and at least 17 to receive a private pilot certificate—but those requirements do not prevent someone from taking an introductory flight.

Will I actually fly the airplane?

Yes! With your instructor right beside you, you'll have the opportunity to take the controls and experience what it's like to fly an airplane.

How long is a Discovery Flight?

Plan for approximately one hour total. This includes time before and after the flight as well as the flight itself.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. We offer a two-rider Discovery Flight option for those who want to bring a friend, family member, spouse, or someone else along. Two-rider flights are subject to aircraft and operational limitations.

How much does a Discovery Flight cost?

Single Rider: $198

Two Riders: $250

Where do Discovery Flights take place?

Discovery Flights are available at both of our St. Louis-area locations:

Downtown St. Louis: Single-rider and two-rider Discovery Flights

Chesterfield: Single-rider Discovery Flights only

Your booking will show the available location and options when you schedule your flight.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If weather or other operational conditions make the flight unsuitable, we'll work with you to reschedule your Discovery Flight.

Can I choose my instructor?

Discovery Flights are scheduled based on instructor and aircraft availability. You'll be paired with an available Certified Flight Instructor for your flight.

Do I need a pilot's license or medical certificate?

No. You don't need a pilot certificate or medical certificate to take an introductory flight. The FAA notes that you can begin flying lessons without a student pilot certificate or medical certificate; those become relevant later for solo flight.

Can I buy a Discovery Flight as a gift?

Absolutely. A Discovery Flight makes a great gift for birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, milestones, or anyone who's always wanted to experience flying.

Can I take photos or videos?

Generally, yes, as long as doing so doesn't interfere with the safe operation of the aircraft or your instructor's instructions. Your instructor will let you know what's appropriate during the flight.

What if I'm nervous about flying?

That's completely normal. For many people, this will be their first time in a small aircraft. Your instructor will walk you through the experience, explain what's happening, and make sure you know what to expect.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Sunglasses are also a good idea, especially on bright days.

What happens after my Discovery Flight?

That's completely up to you. There's no obligation to continue training. If you decide you want to pursue your pilot certificate, your instructor can answer questions about training, costs, scheduling, aircraft, and your next steps.

Does the Discovery Flight count toward my flight training?

If the flight is conducted as an introductory flight lesson, the applicable flight time can be logged as dual instruction and may count toward your training if you continue. The FAA recognizes introductory flights as a way for prospective pilots to begin flight training before committing to a full course of instruction.

How do I book a Discovery Flight?

Purchase your Discovery Flight first. Once your purchase is complete, you'll receive the information needed to schedule your flight.
